DOST-PNRI and UPLB join forces to expound nuclear science to scholars
The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) recently partnered with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) to host "Nuclear Science and Technology 101", a forum that aims to lead the conversation on the beneficial uses of nuclear technology in medicine, agriculture, and energy.
This joint effort brought together over 100 students and faculty who explored together on how nuclear science can safely drive the country’s development.
PNRI addressed the common misconceptions about radioactive waste by showing how these are strictly managed and stored using modern safety standards locally and internationally. Experts also emphasized that selecting sites for nuclear facilities relies on rigorous research into geological and environmental safety, while prioritizing socio-political acceptance from the local community.
The forum provided a dynamic platform for students to glance the future of Philippine nuclear energy, while also sparking a collaborative interest among faculty to revive specialized nuclear science courses and integrate the field into the country’s long-term academic and professional landscape.
The event culminated in a hands-on demonstration where participants used portable gamma-ray spectrometers to measure natural radiation levels within the venue, a practical exercise that underscored DOST-PNRI’s commitment to providing transparent, accessible information on how nuclear technology is safely monitored and applied for the benefit of every Filipino.
