Three New Career Scientists from PNRI
The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) congratulates its newest batch of Career Scientists.
Dr. Custer C. Deocaris, Dr. Vallerie Ann I. Samson and Dr. Jessie O. Samaniego were all conferred the rank of Career Scientist I, as announced by the Scientific Career System.
Aiming to support the career and recognition of scientists in the public service, the Scientific Career System was established through Executive Order 784 and Executive Order 901, and was further strengthened by Republic Act 8439, also known as the Magna Carta for Scientists, Engineers, Researchers and other S & T Personnel in the Government.
Entry in the Scientific Career System is both an honor and a challenge, with those selected having at least a master’s degree in the sciences, as well as significant outputs and contributions in relevant fields of applied and natural sciences.
These include major publications such as scientific articles in international journals, books and compendiums, development of inventions, discoveries, practical applications of research findings and the training of the next generation of researchers, among others.

Atomic regulation bill OK’d by House Committee
The bill towards a stronger legal regulatory framework for ionizing radiation again moves forward as it hurdles the House Committee on Appropriations.
The Committee recently approved the substitute bill for the Comprehensive Atomic Regulation Act, consolidating 13 house bills in support of the measure.
During the committee meeting last May 12, Secretary Fortunato de la Peña of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) expressed his support for the creation of an independent regulatory body consistent with international standards.
Among the key provisions of the bill is the proposed creation of the Philippine Atomic Regulatory Commission which will be charged with the regulation of all activities and facilities involving sources of ionizing radiation.
These include nuclear and radioactive materials, facilities, and radiation-generating equipment which are commonly used in the medical and industrial sectors.

Topics include the future of nuclear power, the impact of climate change and other factors in the nuclear industry, significant impacts of nuclear science and technology in the past decade, and the role of the youth in raising the next generation of nuclear experts, among others.

Bringing the Atom to Filipino Classrooms: PNRI Develops Educational Materials on Nuclear S&T
What is nuclear energy? Is radiation all around us? Is it useful in our daily life? And are there jobs related to nuclear and radiation technology here in the Philippines? These are typical questions from the average high school student about nuclear science.
To help teachers in bringing the benefits of the atom in Filipino classrooms, researchers from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) have developed a series of educational resources on the basic facts and benefits of nuclear science in various fields, with funding and support from the Department of Energy through its Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organization (DOE-NEPIO).
